Three years have gone by and the USS Enterprise arrives at the Starbase Yorktown to replenish supplies. James Kirk (Chris Pine) looks tired by the voyage in the vastness of space. He had applied for Vice Admiral of Yorktown. Spock ( Zachary Quinto) is approached by two Vulcan high officers they give Spock a box which holds something of great importance to him. He is also encountering some relationship problems with Lieutenant Uhura (Zoe Saldana). Both Spock and Uhura suffer from lack of communication, but either way they both pass each other and continue about on their own business. Meanwhile the rest of the crew rest up, while Kirk (Chris Pine) ponders with a decision of Vice Admiral. He really doesn't want to leave the Enterprise, but ultimately leaving Spock, his friend will be a problem he will have to deal with on a later time.
Suddenly an unknown space-craft enters Federation territory, the unknown alien ship is escorted by Yorktown security. An alien is a board the vessel, she is called Kalara (Lydia Wilson), she claims her ship, and crew is stranded on the planet by the nebula. She has come to ask for help, she needs someone to find her crew before it's to late. The USS Enterprise is called to duty, it is a simple mission, locate the vessel and it's crew, return to Yorktown.
As the Enterprise reached the Nebula, they will lose all communication with Yorktown, shields will be down, until they pass through the Nebula. The alien Kalara will assist them on the Enterprise, so that she could identify her ship. Suddenly, Kirk and his crew spotted a strange swarm of small ships on the scanner, thousands of them, they swarm; Looks like insects gathering. The swarm twist and turn, with extreme speed, the ships take out the shields, and attack: The crafts are fast, small enough to attach and break the ships hull, boarding the Enterprise, a team of aliens storm the many locations inside the ship, making it difficult for the crew to defend. Kirk calls a red alert, abandon ship, crew members go for the escape pods within the ships, trying to fight off the alien invaders. Spock and Bones try hard to ward off the aliens, but the aliens are large in numbers, giving them a run for their money. The swarms Commander, Krall (Idris Elba) has come for an alien artifact that Kirk has hidden from recent missions. The swarms Commander fights with Kirk, while the Enterprise has to much damage to continue, Kirk must reach the saucer detachment location with in a short time before the ship is completely destroyed. Kirk must detach the saucer so the rest of the crew can escape safely; But as he tries to start the detachment process, Commander Krall stops him from doing so, they both fight. Uhura runs for the detachment area, avoiding Krall, and begins the process; The saucer separates. The Enterprise takes so much damage that the crew pods fall towards the planet as the attack continues, but some crew members were caught without entering the atmosphere; The swarm has taken some of the pods before it reaches the planet. Krall has defeated the USS Enterprise, he has taken the artifact.
The explosions and debris from the Enterprise, the saucer has detached, it rotates towards the planet, extreme heat surrounding the outer part of the saucer.
The massive saucer enters the planet's atmosphere, it crashes hard, the decent left a mark on the planet. The explosive sound is heard for miles away, a beautiful ship, the USS Enterprise has been in space combat, which at this time it has fallen to the enemy. Here, now, an unknown enemy, a missing crew, a Nebula, no communication.
Review: Trying not to spoil to much of the film which is pretty hard because the film's flow is fast, it moves which is surprising for a Star Trek movie. What i mean by that is simple, a film with just amount of perfect scenes that move the story right along. I loved the way the special effects told the story as well. My last review of Independence day: Resurgence i mentioned how the special effects did not tell, or go with the story. In Star Trek Beyond the camera gave you a full panoramic shot of the Space Station. It even rotated, moved inside, all around the station so you, the viewer, can get a perfect feel of what the crew felt during their arrival at Yorktown. The film Independence Day shots were quick, no view, just a humdrum, boring look, it felt rushed. Star Trek did a wonderful job in intensifying your senses, and to me that's great film making. The producers, film makers got the big picture, they truly understand what audiences want in a film. Plus the scene was really good, it was like being their inside the space station.
The characters were all involved, they helped in making the plot flow, it was not only essential but it's what made this movie rise above other films this summer. Not a huge Star Trek fan but, i love this film, to me it was better than Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). Let me explain further; It was the characters that made the film, the delivery from each of the characters were really good. Darkness was a bit over the top, while Beyond focused on personalities of the characters. The total space thing very little, went right to the planet. An Unknown planet, survival is the first thing on the minds of the characters, they worked together, despite where they were located, working as one made the film to me.
Krall played by Idris Elba was amazing, he really hit the whole bad guy thing, in fact i love the way the story went, involved him, not a humdrum bad guy. Krall was classic in the Star Trek universe, he was more than the usual bad guy. He had a motive, plans, and the best thing is the way he manipulates the situation. The story moved along, it's characters were not empty, they had emotions, expectations, and even their own issues that were not addressed, but as a viewer you could tell the characters needed attention, but left alone to address at a later time. Krall had some deep issues which later was revealed in the film, and when it does you understand a bit more, about him. He wasn't conflicted, he knew his mission, and end. That's what i loved about this film the most, was the real mission, it wasn't special effects, or action, it was all about the characters. This movie felt like an episode of Star Trek.
All in all this film was wonderful, i really don't have anything bad to say about it. Normally i would go into the good, bad, and, the ugly, but why? The film was great, it was everything a Star Trek fan could want. I guess if you're a true die hard and love the Next Generation crew, i really can't please you no matter what i write. that's the facts, you can't please everyone, even the die hard fans. The film was better than the previous film, because the interactions with all the minor and major characters were done well. The characters had a say to what they thought, they had problems that were faced head on. Films like these should be recognized, not chastised. The film should be an example of awesome special effects with a great story behind it. The film's balance is what made the movie flow, and entertain so well. Again the story was the leader, it's effects were a part, it did not take the lead, which in a film of this caliber it's extremely difficult to handle, let alone accomplish. The fact that the effects were there with the story, tells you one thing, that the film makers love the franchise, and it shows. A huge shout out to the production crew, and J.J. Abrams, they really are making a mark in Science Fiction film making. Especially keeping this franchise alive, with a talented fresh crew. The film is wonderful, and if you haven't seen it, my advice to you would be simply, go see it. Enjoy, because you never know where the vastness of space will take you. I could go on, but that would be pulling your proverbial leg.
