The film starts off with Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) arguing with her boyfriend Richard (Pilou Asbaek). He wants her to deliver a briefcase to the building behind them. 1000.00 is the amount paid on delivery, he tells Lucy that the money will be split between them.
Entering the building, uncomfortable, nervous she approaches the front desk, she tells the man that she is here for Mr Jang (Min-sik Choi). Holding the briefcase up, so that the man could see. Suddenly five men approach, grabs Lucy (Johansson) by the arm and takes her to there destination, Mr. Jang. Catching a small glimpse of her dead boyfriend, splattered on the glass. She tries to scream but fear takes hold of her, as the men continue on.
Mr. Jang wants to know what is in the solid briefcase she is holding. a translator on the phone is put on speaker for Lucy; he tells her she must open the case, the code is 140. Meanwhile everyone moves to the back of the room, watching Lucy carefully. riot shields are held in front of them; insuring safety, an explosion now would ruin Jang's operations. The numbers are in, Lucy opens the case which reveals four plastic sacs, eye-popping blue powder inside.
A junkie looking at Lucy, enters the room. Lucy observes while he makes his way to a seat, looking at Mr. Jang. A straw is pulled out and given to junkie; he then proceeds, snorts the blue powder, which makes him laugh loud. Mr. Jang along with his men begin to laugh as well. Suddenly, a gun is pulled out. Mr. Jang shoots the Junkie. the laughter dies along with the Junkie.
Mr. Jang explains to Lucy that she will work for him. the translator over the phone continues; Lucy tries to resist but her efforts are in vain. She is beaten, until she passes out.
Waking up in a hotel, her surroundings are unknown, she notices a bandage on her stomach. bringing on a bit of pain along with the confusion. The same men from the building, her captures; bring Lucy to Mr. Jang. three men are also in the room with Lucy. "The Limey", a man with a British accent comes in to explain the circumstances of this meeting. A drug called CPH4 has been implanted inside all there intestines, this drug is the new cocaine, it will bring profits up. They will go to different locations, where Jang's men will meet them.
Later, Lucy is taken to another room where she is chained up, kicked punched, until she falls face forward. The drug inside of her starts to leak, her body convulses, confusion, fear, all her senses begin to exploded. Her mind begins to recognizes what is happening. Lucy's (Scarlett Johansson) brain begins to reach outside the proverbial box. recognizing all the elements surrounding decision making, her soul tells her to act. The thug she teased to her, she was able to take him out without ever learning, or being taught to fight. Her brain knew how to eliminate the danger. Survival rate, 100%, the brain's defenses made her kill the thug.
First let me start by saying, we do use more than 10% of our brain. It has been proven, this assumption that only 10% of brain capacity is used is false. The film brings out the 10% myth like it was reality, it's not the facts. Just another film trying to make big money using the myth and making a story out of it. When we sleep, our brain is still active; only using 10% would kill us. Flesh without thought processes. A piece of meat without cognitive functions. Look it up for yourself, the internet is a big tool, explore it and learn something for a change. I'm a bit harsh here, because hollywood has a tendency to bring out subject matter, that people somehow believe, and I'm strongly against this one, so please bare with me.
Luc Besson did a wonderful job picking Scarlett Johansson as the lead. Even though he wanted Angelina jolie orginally, she had dropped out, do to schedule issues. Glad the film went with the cast, they all acted in perfection. No changes here, because a good cast makes a good film.
The story has a beginning, middle, and end, which by the way Luc Besson uses the movie writing formula well. Great story, good acting all great qualities that make this Sci-Fi film good. The only problem i really have with the film is the myth. I know its a myth, i really tried to forget that part, and it worked; The story pulled me in. Challenging it was, it held up. The film was enjoyable, or at least watchable.
Lucy i recommend for sci-fi folks who love good story telling. Filmmakers did a good job making us think throughout the film. Check out the Matrix trilogy, Memento, these film's have the strangeness about them, and if you love Sci-Fi, have to own them or at least watch the films.
