1971, in Harrisville, Rhode Island a farmhouse, a family just moved in.  Carolyn (Lili Taylor) and Roger Perron (Ron Livingston) with their five daughters.  The transition went smooth as the family gets comfortable with the home.  The dog Sadie, barking, not entering the house.  Worried, Roger (Livingston) secures the dog outside, not ever thinking that something evil is lurking about.
The next day, the family finds their dog Sadie dead, next to the house.  An unexplained circumstance or something else.  Suddenly, paranormal activities occur, clapping from within the house, doors opening and closing.  Daughter Cindy (Mackenzie Foy) sleepwalks into her sister's room, walking into a wardrobe, continuously.  The activities increase with an old women hiding in the shadows, she comes out of the darkness and attacks the girl.  The entity had told her that everyone will die, she screams as Roger (Livingston) comes in along with Carolyn (Lili Taylor).  The young girl is hysterical, crying as if someone or something scared her.   She described the old women to her parents, as tears flow down, a crying, screaming desperation of fear.
Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are paranormal investigators, they have a home, which in one of the rooms has objects that were in some ways connected to evil, the room blessed but is secure, away from the very people it haunted.  Some cases the Warren's deal with demons, Ed will not perform the exorcism, an experienced priest must be sanctioned by the Vatican in order to perform such a feet.
Ed and Lorraine were at a seminar speaking about what they do as paranormal investigators in the field.  They went into various details on the many cases they have dealt with.  The Annabell doll, what occurred, and how it was vanquished.
Carolyn (Lili Taylor) was present during the seminar. Scared, desperate, she approached the Warren's with her story and experiences.
Ed and Lorraine interviewed the family, all the haunting subject matter and occurrences are brought to the light.  They even had the property investigated, which they learned that it was dated all the way back to the 1700's. The Salem witch trials were occurring during that period.  A women who was later determined that she was a witch; one night she performed a ritual that would kill her infant child.  Her husband had found out about her and the ritual.  Afterwards, she proclaimed her soul and determined nature to Satan.  Cursed all who would take her land, and committed suicide.  The house has been built on this very property, a curse, a witch fused with a demon that has possessed Carolyn.  The Warren's must vanquish the Demon and rid all evil that has gripped the house and the land.
The film by horror standards is top notch, it even surpasses the bigger films like the Exorcist.  That being said, this film really puts you on the edge of your seat.  The hand clap, to the wardrobe scene, really good scare tactics that blends this film into a horror masterpiece.  The stars of the film are Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, they really, and i mean really hit Ed and Lorraine Warren well.
I loved the paranormal facts throughout the film, like the possessions.  The three steps that lead to a full blown demon possession.  Infestation, oppression, and finally possession. Ed and Lorraine Warren are true paranormal investigators, as depicted on film.  The musical setting really does it for me, i love when films like the conjuring base a real life occurrence, the background music of that time kicks in.  The soundtrack, did it for me, sold me a copy.
Camera bouncing from room to room makes this film a gem.  Not talking about the found footage, the over-used no story film style.  But, the way the camera flowed, smooth as can be, no hesitation, music kicks in and as a viewer a get the whole picture just by the camera moving from one place to another.  James Wan did a wonderful job as director, he had to of focused on the scene, and imagined the camera moving so smooth, because it worked.  The film had me at hello.  The director's job is not just the cast, but the overall scene, what is established and made to work in that scene.
Now for my controversial question of the day, since this review will be out on Halloween.  Can a Christian man of faith be overtaken by a demon?  Think about it.  The bible as written describes in the new testament, when a man or women proclaims his soul to Jesus, ideally that person is saved.  The gates of heaven are opened to you and your loved one.  But what if by some unknown force, a demon overtakes that very person of faith.  Can it happen? will it happen.  Bible scholars basically put it as a big NO! the one who? proclaims himself to Christ will always be protected.
Anneliese Michel, died on July 1st 1976, Bavaria, West Germany.  Cause of death, Starvation and dehydration.  This 23 year old young women underwent a Catholic exorcism rites in 1975 and died the year after.  Due to lack of medical care, hence the malnourishment and dehydration.  Her parents and priest were charged with negligent homicide.  Imagine parents who are Christ loving people undergoing this procedure, the public learned of such a deed, which cited a media frenzy.  The women before her death was deemed possessed because of her obscure nature.  Intolerant of holy symbols, began to hear voices, became suicidal.  Michel and her family were convinced she was overtaken by a demon.  Two priests began the ritual that took 10 months in secret, as ordered by the Bishop.  After the death of Anneliese Michel the priests and parents were found guilty of negligent homicide, sentenced to six months in jail.  This particular case is misidentified as mental illness, negligence, abuse.  So did this young women get overtaken by a demon, or did she have a mental disorder.  I will leave you with that thought, sometimes our huge world that we live in as complex as it is, somethings are unexplained.  Mysteries of the world, secret deep spiritual paths that will one day lead us or ultimately destroy us.  Either way, have a great Halloween, check out the Conjuring, and any horror film that tickles your fancy.
