An asteroid carrying an alien race crashed somewhere in Europe.  The aliens looked like insects, there speed and intelligence made them the perfect weapon.  The aliens could hide, evade, and even predict thought processes.  The outer-world creatures were not friendly, but killing machines that waged war starting with Europe.  The human race allied forces, needed something to fight these insect-like creatures.  The military called them the mimics, because of the way these being handle themselves on the battle field.

The NATO-led United Defense Forces constructed a mechanized battle suit that could finally kill the mimics (Aliens).  Utilizing the new combat suit, which led them to victory at Verdun, France. The " Angel of Death" herself was present in the battle, Sgt. Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), becoming an instant icon, this soldier killed hundreds, without even flinching.  Major William Cage of the United States Army, a propaganda elitist telling the story of Sgt. Vrataski (Emily Blunt), which elevated the war efforts.

Waking up from a helicopter ride to London the morning before the invasion of France.  Cage (Cruise) is to meet with the Commander of the Western allies, General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), The Major believes that he is in London to boost the General's image.  The General has different plans for the United States Major.  The General orders Cage (Cruise) to go with the Allied troops to land in France, provide ground coverage for the media.  Major Cage (Cruise) tells the General that he does not have any field experience, it would be a lamb to a slaughter.  The ROTC Cadet, and advertising expert is nervous, he must think fast in order to sway the General.  Trying everything at hand to convince the General that going into combat isn't a good idea, all is lost the General could not be swayed, in fact after Cage (Cruise) tried to black mail him in his last ditch effort, he realized everything went from bad to worse.  A squad of MP's surrounded him, his last thoughts were to explain the situation.  The multiple wires stuck to his body, a Taser gun used by the MP's brought down Cage (Cruise), rendering him unconscious.

Waking up handcuffed to the loud echo of boots hitting the ground, Cage (Cruise) realizes he is in a military base, Heathrow Airport turned into a base of operations for the Allied forces.  Sgt Farrell (Bill Paxton) has orders from the General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) that describes Cage (Cruise) a deserter, and the biggest one, impersonating of an officer.  Stripped from his rank, this coward, deserter will be assigned to J-Squad.  The squad with the forces on the base is preparing for the battle the next day.  Cage (Cruise), with no training is thrown in to an endless loop that will change his life forever.  The squad will not help him, everyone seems pissed, but somehow, someway Cage thinks he still can get out of this mess.

The armored suit, built for the invasion, a mechanized piece of destruction is about to have another client.  Cage (Cruise) puts on the suit, he doesn't know anything about it, he tries to maneuver, but cannot, his mind tries to understand but fear takes hold of him.  Afterwards, the squad including Cage enters the aircraft that will fly over the battle.  The J-Squad will drop and engage the aliens.  The aircraft lifts, engines and turbo lifts ignite.  Cage holds for dear life; suddenly the craft gets bombarded by enemy fire, the soldiers drop in the heart of the battle, Cage holds on, but his fear intensifies as the aircraft starts to nose dive to the ground.  Finally Cage decides to let go of his fear, and drops.  The decent to hell begins, all the mimics are present, an attack or ambush, either way hell engulfs every soldier that drops onto the belly of the beast.

The film is like a Groundhog Day (1993), a futuristic version of the 1993 film.  Tom Cruise plays Cage, a Major for the United States Army.  He is recruiter of a sorts, glamorizing the war efforts, and the elite soldier Rita (Emily Blunt).  The overall progression of the film is really good, because you have Cage (Cruise) a coward, which in someways i could understand why? he did not want to go to battle.  But, the General wanted him only with the media, ground coverage.  I'm so used to seeing Tom Cruise kick butt on film, that being said, i sat and watched this movie, i almost panicked.  What happened to my hero? where was the mission impossible leader.  He was a coward and i loved it, its challenging for an actor to evolve the way that Cage did.  Really impressed at the scenes of the film, they went smoothly, it flowed and no boredom.

The Director Doug Liman who's film lineup include The Bourne Trilogy, and i can't forget Christopher McQuarrie who wrote the screenplay, based on the novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.  Wonderful cast with a action packed story.  I had to make the GroundHog Day comparison because it is basically a loop film, and with that being said, loop films are very difficult to film.  The editing has to be on target, the scenes have to flow.  I mean everything must be perfect, or least trick the audience into believing the scene looped yet again. If you could trick the audience then you got a good film, because that's the magic of film making, bringing scenes to life, making them real.

Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson the supporting cast is amazing, love every interaction with these actors, they really make the film for what it is.  The J-Squad team: Jonas Armstrong (Skinner), Tony way (Kimmel), Kick Gurry (Griff), Franz Drameh (Ford), Dragomir Mrsic (Kuntz), Charlotte Riley (Nance) and Masayoshi Haneda (Takeda).  A big shout out to these guys, they are the core, and guts of the film.  The main and supporting actors are excellent, but these guys bring it to the table.  Cage needed to meet J-Squad, he needed their help in order to take out the Omega, and save the world.  The J-Squad is the real deal, they're the backbone of the film.

The aliens (mimics) in the film is really cool, love the special effects, like i said in my past reviews;  The story comes first, followed by the effects.  The two can be combined, which in Edge of tomorrow it does so well.  The creatures to me looked like insects, which makes sense because they came on an asteroid from space.  blasted media spots, a Major boosting the war efforts, cool looking power armor.  The aircraft's in the film looked good, especially when they were blasted out of the sky by the aliens. The scene with Cage moving into battle taking out the aliens was pretty awesome, he used the armored suit to his full advantage, making the action impressive.

The overall progression of the film was perfect; Cage went from being a coward to a full blown hero.  the beginning Cage was advertising the war efforts, dishonored as a soldier, called a deserter; Then we have Cage meeting Rita, which opened up a new can of worms.  Cage has a reason to continue his progression, even though if it means his death.  Underline meaning of the film meant more to me than the action and effects.  Its the progression that made me want more; when a character is motivated, you are motivated.  Cage evolved into a hero, he struggled with every challenge that came his way.  As a critic you try to look for the core and unique qualities that make up a film, you take the scenes a part piece by piece.  Sometimes it can distract you from the enjoyment of the movie, which in my case i would not be doing this if i didn't  enjoy it.

The film is an action/Sci-Fi, that being said, it does have a really good story with a wonderful cast.  The action flows with the story, even the special effects are good.  Check it out, i recommend it highly, don't let the trailers sway you, this film hits all marks in my opinion.

P.S. Henry's not going to tell you but I - his loving wife will - be sure to check out the site too! More great Henry - isms to enjoy!!!! Reel Time Movie Review...  Thanks all! I'm doing a guest post on Walter Mitty!!! YAY!
